Welcome back to all class 1 children. We have loved hearing all about your adventures over the Easter Holidays.

We had a fantastic last term and the children thoroughly enjoyed our topic on Queen and Country. We went on a wonderful trip to Skipton Castle where the children learnt all about the history of the castle and imagined what it was like to live there.

The children really enjoyed learning about forces and making and testing out their own catapults.

During our science week topic on Light children enjoyed learning all about light and dark, light sources and the northern lights. They enjoyed doing experiments and were fascinated by a visit from Professor Salmon, asking him lots of interesting questions.

In literacy children enjoyed reading a variety of royal themed stories, featuring princesses, kings, queens and dragons. They particularly enjoyed the story ‘The Queens Knickers’ which they found very funny. They adapted the story to create their own version. They also wrote fantastic non chronological reports about the Queen and Skipton castle.

In numeracy children increased their understanding of addition and subtraction and used their knowledge to answer number problems. They researched different measures looking at rulers, tape measures, measuring jugs, balances, scales and timers.

We finished off our topic by holding a royal garden party. The children planned the party themselves. They wrote invitations, shopping lists and baked scones for the party.

Our new topic is ‘A Pirates Life For Me’

We are going to be reading a variety of Pirate based books and adapting them to create our own stories. We will be researching famous pirates and writing non-chronological reports.

We will be exploring the books we look at in Literacy lessons further through the use of Art, Music, Dance and Drama.

We are going to be investigating different materials and using this information to design and make our own pirate ships. We will test ours ships and see if they float!

The children are enjoying our new ‘Pirate Shop’ role play area. They are practicing and developing their numeracy skills using coins.

We are looking forward to another exciting term in Class 1.
