USEFUL FORMS IN SCHOOL

WELCOME TO CLASS 1 - .

In September 2011 we had 20 children in class - all Reception children.

Mrs Beever is the class teacher and Mrs Burr is the main Teaching Assistant in Class 1.  There is support from Mrs Ogden and Miss Birkinshaw covers PPA time.  Mrs McBurney teaches French for a session every Thursday.

We will be keeping you informed about topic work, visits, etc. and we hope you find this page useful.

 READ, WRITE INC

Thank you for all your support with the little tasks sent home. We are regularly getting all children's wallets returned. The children and making brilliant progress with 'Fred Talk' for reading and spelling and recognising their speed sounds.

Tips to help your child. 'little and often' helps learning.

  • keep revising the sounds and written formation of the speed sounds.
  • Re-read the word sheets
  • Blend little real and nonsense words using the speed sounds
  • Finger spell simple 2 or 3 letter words e.g. up or map using only the speed sounds taught

We have combined the pirates and literacy on the computer with 'poop deck pirates.' The pirate makes gold coins but can't read the words on them. A child has to blend the word then decide if it is real or nonsense. If the word makes sense it goes in the treasure chest and if it is nonsense it is thrown in the sea. Children are well motivated to read.

FINGER SPELLING

This is encoding words. This is what we do.

Choose a short word using sounds already taught

Tell the child how many sounds e.g. 3 and the word e.g. dog.

The child holds up 3 fingers on their non dominant hand then presses one finger at a time with their dominant hand from left to right as you would write saying the sounds e.g. d o g. They then blend to say 'dog'.

Right handed children hold up fingers on their left hand and press with the right.

Left handed children hold up fingers on their right hand and press with their left.

Model and help your child as much as possible. Some vowels and word endings are hard to hear.

It all sounds more complicated than it is. Just ask you child to show you!

FOHS GRANT

It was super to have money to spend on the class and we have invested jointly in plants and compost and buying a story sack with games and booksbased on the text 'Mrs Honey's Hat' which the children will be able to use in class and borrow for home use. thank you very much for our £50.00

PIRATES

Our theme has really taken off and the children have enjoyed some fantastic activities. We hope you have enjoyed the lovely puppets, paintings and other creative work sent home by Miss Birkinshaw. The children have also contributed to some lovely classroom displays using computers and various media.

In our continuous provision, the children are writing in the captains log, making treasure maps, moulding coins and bones in the dough and love playing with all the role play materials. They are a cooperative and imaginative group.

SENSORY GARDEN

After the summer some bedding and vegetable plants in the garden had died but our tomato plants had survived and we had a few tomatoes. Class 1 hve enjoyed weeding, renewing compost and planting up bedding plants, ornamental cabbages and a pumpkin plant in the hanging baskets and containers. In the really dry weather all the plants have dried out quickley and the children have loved watering them. A little bit of tomato food has perked the tomato plants up too. We used the Mayors visit as an incentive to weed the bark chippings and prepare the garden. Although the visit was cancelled the children enjoyed taking pride in their surroundings and now notice when things need doing and can find the gloves and tools. We obviously have some budding gardeners and allotment owners
